Ron's Arizona trip, February new moon
Sunflower Galaxy (Messier 63) - This M63 image was taken the night of Feb 12, when conditions were very steady.
Technical details: 48 minutes luminance; 14:21:28 minutes Red, Green, and Blue. Telescope: Takahashi FCT-150
with Finger Lakes CM-10ME camera, Paramount 1100s mount. The small pixels of this camera, plus the great seeing conditions, allowed
me to capture a great deal of detail in this image.
Messier 13, globular cluster - This M13 image was taken the same night as the
Sunflower images. The seeing was outstandingly steady for both sessions. Globular clusters contain an enormous number of
very dim stars, and this is one of the few times I have had conditions steady enough to capture and resolve so many of them.
Technical details: 9 minutes of luminance; color binned 2x2, total of 9:13.5:18 minutes in RGB. Same mount, telescope and camera as for Sunflower Galaxy.
Witch Head Nebula - This nebula is not normally a target for
CCD imagers because it is very large and very dim. I used a Pentax SDUF-II refractor to take this image. The large field of view was big enough to
include the face portion of this nebula and a little bit more.
Technical details: 22 minutes of luminance binned 2x2; color binned 3x3, total of 7:10.5:14 minutes in RGB. Pentax SDUF-II 100mm f/4), FLI CM-10ME, Paramount 1100s.
Imaging the Sky 2001
I spoke at the ITS 2001 conference in Salem Oregon, and I really enjoyed the
conference. It's a very easy-going conference, with tons of good speakers. On
what other topic would you find so much good material that sessions lasted late
into the night? The Saturday night party is also a real treat.
Here are links to slides I created for the two talks I gave at the
conference:
