Many cameras and CCD chips will cause internal reflections on very bright stars. These reflections are often taller than they are wide because the light reflects off of the surface structure of the chip (chip surfaces are not smooth). The light further reflects off of the chip cover slip and/or the window found just above the chip. This tutorial shows a complex but effective method of removing most of the effects of such halos. TIP: For simpler, smaller halos, the easiest method is often simply to select the offending halo with the Magic Wand tool in Photoshop, and desaturate and darken it.
